RI.4.2 — Determine Main Idea and Summarize Informational Text

Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

Students identify the central point or big idea the author wants readers to understand. In grade 4, this means looking across the whole text, not just picking an interesting detail or topic.

Students locate the most important details that help develop or prove the main idea. They learn to distinguish supporting evidence from minor or interesting but less important information.

Students go beyond listing details and explain the connection between each detail and the text's main idea. This builds reasoning about how authors organize information to teach or inform readers.

Students retell the most important ideas from the text in a brief, clear way without adding opinions or too many extra details. A strong summary includes the main idea and the most important supporting information.
